Hyperopia (farsightedness) without astigmatism means that the near vision is blurred and distance vision may or may not be blurred depending on the patient's age and other factors. This is because light is focused behind the retina secondary to one or more of the following reasons:

• The eye may be too small so that light is focused behind the retina.
• The cornea (clear window of the eye) is too flat, thus not focusing the light far enough forward so the focus is behind the retina.
• The lens is too weak thus not focusing the light far enough forward so that the focus is behind the retina.

In hyperopia, vision can be corrected by altering the curve on the front of the eye to make the curve steeper. However, this is somewhat more difficult to do than making the curve flatter as in myopia.

As in myopia (nearsightedness) another alternative is to place a lens implant in the eye with or without removing the normal lens.
